11 Life Story Prompts That Will Unlock Memories You Forgot You Had

1 min read

There's nothing quite like someone asking 'so, tell me about yourself' for my brain to go completely blank (nope, not even tumbleweed) and totally forget who I am. Well, turns out the same thing happens when someone tries to journal their life story. After two years of deep diving into the world of life story journals, I’m excited to share everything that helped me along the way.

Whether you’re writing for yourself, for future generations, or just for fun, these 11 introduction prompts are designed to jog your memory and take you back to moments you didn’t even know you remembered.

1.     What is the most bizarre compliment you've received that somehow made your day?

2.     What would your 10-year-old self think of you?

3.     What would you say to your favourite childhood teacher if you saw them today?

4.     What is the story behind your nickname?

5.     Who inspired you when you were young?

6.     What is a useful skill that you were taught when young, but you never really use now?

7.     What was your favourite place in your childhood home?

8.     What recommendations would you give someone visiting your childhood hometown for the first time?

9.     Is there a moment when you realised what qualities you value most in someone?

10.  Describe a time you laughed until you cried. Who were you with?

11.  What is a family tradition you secretly (or not-so-secretly) love?

So, grab a notebook and write! Don’t worry about making it perfect—just start telling your story, one memory at a time. You’ll be surprised by what comes up when you follow the trail. These questions can even be great icebreakers or conversation starters with family and friends.

We’ll be exploring more about how to recall memories in detail a little later, but for now, we hope you enjoyed these introductory questions to help get you started!
